A Couple Words with Wesley Robert

Wesley Robert knows what's up. On top of taking nice photos he also puts out a really rad black and white photo journal tri-annually called Nowhere Fast. The first one sold out, but the next issue is almost done. Keep your eyes peeled!

Who: Wesley Robert O'Driscoll. I go by Wesley Robert as far as art goes... There's no real story behind that, sorry.

What: Photographs, candid, random, un-staged photographs. I do some collages and stuff, nothing worth talking about though, ha, let's just say I take pictures.

When: Whenever it makes sense, sometimes only when it doesn't make sense. You know... I carry a camera wherever I go, so it usually just works itself out... Daytime usually though, by nighttime I'm usually fairly forgetful.

Where: Anywhere I go is where I like to work from. I don't really go out to take photos, I just go enough places and have enough fun that I don't really have to go too far out of my way to get a picture... which may be why I hate 99% of all my shots, haha. I just live my life, day to day and bring a camera along. I'm pretty thankful for all the friends I have and the lifestyle choices I'm made, it makes for some alright footage.

Why: That's simple... all you really have in life is memories, and proof, I have shoe box after show box of both...

How: Point and shoots. t4's and stylus epics. I used to have a lot of fun with polaroids but that's slowing down. My dad gave me a nikon fg20 he used to use before I was born, I try to use it as much as I can too... film though, always, no digital.

Gordon Ball in Montreal and Toronto

Gordon Ball lives in Montreal. He has taken pictures for everyone and their mom. Even Penthouse. Oh baby! He has a new show called I am sorry. Sincerely, Frankenstein coming up in Montreal from August 27 - Sept. 2 at the Emporium Gallery. After that it moves to Sleeping Giant in Toronto from Sept. 18 - 25th.

Click on the flyer to see a bigger/legible version on Gordon's site.

In 1994, I started photographing my teenage friends - doing drugs for the first time, stealing booze from their parents, fighting security guards at skate spots, skinny dipping with chicks, experiencing 'first love', etc. However, in recent years I moved away from this candid, personal documentary style of photography as I was increasingly photographing for corporate clients. And, it left me feeling somewhat unfulfilled. This exhibition represents a photographic return to a subject matter and style of photography that I originally started out with. It all takes cues from a quote I once heard that, "we may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us" - something that I genuinely believe to be true after working on this project." - Gordon Ball

Billy Kraft is Sixteen and Lives in Illinois

This dude takes really awesome photographs. When I was sixteen I was too busy smoking pot and looking like a total retard.

Why did you start taking photographs?
I started taking photographs of my brother skateboarding a while back and the act evolved from there.

Tell me about where you are from in Illinois.
I live about an hour north of Chicago.

What the hell are these about:

Those are my attractive friends! My one friend has a basement with a huge projector screen as a television and we play XBOX for hours down there. When the projector is not receiving a source, the screen turns blue. They are in front of the projector screen. The camera used was a 10$ digital Vivitar camera that I purchased at a drugstore which is why it is low quality and grainy. I mean, you can't shoot all film, right? The dude in this photo is named Brett. 18154512199. Text him.

Has your mom seen your photostream? What does she think of it?
Actually she has! A direct quote from her regarding my photostream: "It's the best one". There you have it.

Are your photos inspired by anything in particular?
Nope.

For some reason I always think this is a Pro Wrestling match at first glance even though it is clearly a basketball game.

Are you into Pro Wrestling?
Pro Wrestling is insane. But I would rather browse Tumblrs than that. I think my bro took that photo, he would want credit. CREDIT GOES TO JIMMY.

Send me a photograph you've taken that isn't on the internet anywhere. I'm talking about some exclusive shit.

Exclusive shit attached. That came off a roll full of more exclusive shit that will remain exclusive because it's just shit. I hate bad rolls.

For more Billy Kraft check out his FLICKR, it's all sorts of awesome.

A Visit with Alex Howard & Sophie Curtis

Since the beginning of August I had been hosting UK photographers Alex Howard and Sophie Curtis at my apartment in Brooklyn. A few days ago they took a plane back to London and left me all depressed and exhausted. Due to the excessive amounts of alcohol we drowned ourselves in, I don't remember a lot of the time we spent together. Luckily my camera does.

*photos 2, 4, 9, 11, & 15 by sophie curtis

If you haven't seen it already, you need to check out OUT HERE OVER THERE for more work by those two.

Hello Nina Hartmann.

Nina Hartmann just sent us an email with some pictures to let us know what she's been up to. This is what she told us.

This photo was taken when I drove down to paris this summer with a few friends from London. I can't believe how scary this one turns out, freak accident photos are usually my favorite ones from the roll. It was taken in the catacombs.

This one is of my boyfriend at the time, Dan. These pictures are really important to me because that cat (casper) is not around anymore. He grew up with that cat, and it is definetly the best cat I've ever met. When I met Dan for the first time his bone collection impressed me. It was taken in Riverview, FL about a year ago.

This picture makes me really happy. I constantly try to imitate art history and this one reminds me of a rococo painting or something. Its of my friends Allyson and Erica, they are best friends and their friendship translates really beautifully on film. This was taken when we drove to the Ichutucknee springs north on Gainesville, FL. It was actually crowded that day but it rained and cleared all the tourists out. Right after I took this a crawfist bit Allyson's foot.

Carl W. Heindl

Toronto-based, Carl is the kind of guy you see at every show/opening/everywhere with his camera, and I like that. Devotion, if you will. While his photos are more clean than the majority of featured artists on this blog, I feel as though he posseses many of the same qualities of the usual BOTY analogists. Regardless, I like his photos a lot and I suggest you follow this link because there is so much more to see.
