A couple words with Andrea Sonnenberg

I've been keeping an eye on the Teen Witch for a while now. She's got me under her spell without a doubt.

Who: My friends know me as Teen Witch.

What: I have the best friends. Shit gets weird.

When: All the time. I've always got a spare roll just in case. You have to be prepared. When I don't get the shot I want, I get really bummed out. Just recently it was my best girl's birthday. We all went to this local bar we party at and a some of us girls ended up giving her topless lapdances on the dance floor. It was wild. A bunch of pictures were taken that I knew were going to be pure gold but later on we somehow lost the roll and its been hard to accept the fact that I will never see how the pictures would have turned out. Major buzzkill.

Where: San Francisco. I love taking trips to switch things up a bit, but I will always call this place my home.

Why: I kinda just stumbled into it and before I knew it I was addicted to getting rolls developed. I bought a camera and started bringing it around more and more. I do it because it's fun.

How: We don't need much to have a good time.

Aleksandra Waliszewska

The people at My Dance The Skull from London just put out this great zine of work by Aleksandra Waliszewska. I don't really know much about either of them, but I definitely recommend checking out Aleksandra's work.

First of all, I should apologize because I think I've dropped my digital camera one too many times and so some of the pictures aren't that great. Just buy the zine and you can look at it any time you want. Aleksandra's work isn't mom friendly by any means, but I really, really like it.

Numbered edition of 250, 20 pages full colour on nice paper.
Thanks My Dance The Skull!
There's also more awesome stuff on her flickr.

Impose & My New Zine

The people at Impose Magazine put up an entertaining little feature about us today. Thanks!
In other, more shameless self promotional news, I put out a new mini-zine a week or two ago. I've got about 5 copies left and you can get them at our webstore if you want. Here are a couple of pictures that are in it.

My new zine has photos and collages I made over the last few months. It's hand-assembled, 28 B&W pages + centerfold, edition of 20.

Kyle Cook photo stories

Kyle Cook is a photographer from New York. Since Kyle has been working with him for a while now, this is the part of the post where we get to name-drop Ryan McGinley. Anyways, here are some of Kyle's words and photographs.

I'm really into grain and strange colors, color casts and fogging of the film or distortion of the light. I just really like to have no idea what a photograph is going to look like until I see a contact sheet. This image was from my girlfriends shower in Wyoming that her father built. It has this sick window in it so it's showering with direct light. It was something I had never seen before and we ended up spending a good amount of time there haha.

This is Hanna. She's really rad. I have been working with Ryan Mcginley for almost two years now and this was taken on one of his road trips in Ukiah California. It's one of my favorite places in this country. Especially the house we got to stay at. We ended up staying there at the halfway point for about a week for some relaxation and much needed rest. I remember taking the photo too and her laughing at me maybe even a little anxious about what she looked like in the photo. Because she was laughing or making this a pretty funny face. But she's awesome she's always down to take a photo, this time i just caught her off guard.

This is a friend of mine who I met through another friend. She's a couple years younger than me but you'd never know it actually when I'm around her I feel like I'm the immature one. But she's cool, and I just like taking pictures of girls. I don't know why but I just end up taking pictures of girls that share some kind of romantic undertone. But this is some casted film so it looks red. I had spent a couple days hanging out with her and another friend in Jersey where I'm from and thats how I made this photo. Many of my photos really come directly from life. I guess I consider myself a documentary photographer but sometimes I push it. But I never use lights or anything than what's around me.

This is my girlfriend and she had her teeth fixed and so half of her mouth was numb from the novocaine and she couldn't smile right. So I couldn't help but try to make her laugh so I could see how funny she looked when she couldn't lift the other half of her mouth upwards. I like how scary it looks.

This was also shot in California on a road trip. I don't know what to say about a photo like this but I just really like the color and the perspective.

This is when I had my wisdom teeth removed because one of them had gotten infected. It was pretty painful for about a week and a half before the surgery then I was so relieved but really nervous as well to have it done. I really dislike being put under and even needles, especially in my mouth. But I accidentally drank like the tiniest sip of water before the surgery and they told me it was too much of a hazard to put me under because then I could choke on my own vomit. So after some deciding I went through with the surgery conscious. It was pretty nuts the only way I kept calm was because I kept taking photos of myself. But I could hear the surgeon cracking my teeth with pliers and pulling them out. They even let me keep the two of four intact ones. I am making a necklace out of them soon.

This was taken near the border of georgia and Tennessee at a house we were staying at during Ryan's 09 road trip. I just really loved shooting Hanna, and so did everyone else. But my friend Nicky got some smoke bombs which turned out to be really good and we just started shooting. All of us have very similar photos from this it was pretty funny watching 5 kids shoot the same thing. It happened a lot of the trip. I thought it was neat that everyone could recognize a moment all at once without talking to each other. But I really liked watching other photographers that I am friends with who were with me on the trip, take photos of things. It's so interesting to see what people are interested in picturing.

My friend showed me a cool trick to color casting film. And thats where this red is from. But On the trip this one night this was also in california we watched the moon rise up form the mountains really slowly. I had seen the moon rise and fall and the sun rise so man times this past summer that they all start to blur together. I once sat on the side of a cliff for ten hours while everyone else in the group was shooting in a vertical cave that had the tiniest entry ever. It really was no larger than the length of my foot. I have some claustrophobia so I just couldn't even force myself to go in. But I saw the moon rise over the mountains that night and watched it's slow path across the sky and eventually it turned to the sun climbing the mountains. It was a wild night because I was listening to bears in the brush near by while trying to distance myself from the snack bag as much as possible. one of my favorite lunar things is a blood moon, and so this photograph kind of reminds me of that.

New Suzanna Zak

I've been helping Platform with their photo section and I just posted Suzanna Zak's newest series, I’ll Jump if I Want, and I Won’t if I Don’t,. Its about Russian pagan rituals. Check it out.

On a side note to anyone who ordered Exteens and hasn't gotten it yet: We had some post office problems, but everything is on its way. So sorry for the delay!
