Papich and Williams' Repurpose

Repurpose is a 40 page collection of photographs by U.S. based musicians Matt Papich and Joe Williams.

Repurpose is 9"x11", full colour, with a sewn binding and hand written cover. It was published by Gottlund Verlag in an edition of 200.

I am going to be honest and say that I don't know anything about Matt or Joe, nor do I know anything about their bands, Ecstatic Sunshine and White Williams. I am listening to them right now for the first time and I have got to tell you that I like their photos more than I like their songs. However, what do I know? You're probably more hip and trendy and know more about underground indie music than me. Anyways, this is a really cool zine.

"Their photos would most accurately be described as snapshots. Quiet and attentive, the images often focus on peculiarity."

This one is my favorite.

You can pick up a copy here, or go to this website that is listed in the back of the book, but I don't know anything about it.

Plain + Fancy by Nicholas Gottlund

Plain + Fancy is Nicholas Gottlund's 16 page, 7"x11" saddle stitched zine that was co-published by Golden Age Printed and Gottlund Verlag at the time of his exhibition at Golden Age in Chicago.

This is a really nicely printed monograph. Nicholas explores the idea of animism with these emotive photos. That's pretty cool!

Animism is a philosophical, religious or spiritual idea that souls or spirits exist not only in humans and animals but also in plants, rocks, natural phenomena such as thunder, geographic features such as mountains or rivers, or other entities of the natural environment, a proposition also known as hylozoism in philosophy.

Plain + Fancy is sold out on Nicholas' site, but you can still grab a copy at the Golden Age shop if you'd like.

Spirit by Henry Roy

Spirit is Henry Roy's beautiful photo book and is another sweet release from Gottlund Verlag.
Henry Roy is a 47 year old Haitian-born photographer from France and he made a really, really excellent book.

Spirit is a 64 page book containing full colour photos and 6 short stories in French and English. The stories are really great and add another dimension to the work. Although I don't think the stories are directly related to any of the photographs, I found myself jumping back to look at things as I read through them and that was really great.

"Spirit is as subtle and intangible as a breath of air.
It is an energy circulating between beings and things.
It travels with light, winds, clouds or waves, it penetrates in stones, plants and animals.
It affects humans, seizing control of their bodies, whose sentiments and sensuality he reveals.
It manifests itself at the boundaries of the visible, in a dimension where only imagination can penetrate."

- Henry Roy, Paris 2009.

You can read a nice interview that Nicholas Gottlund did with Roy about the book right here or go get a copy.

Peter Sutherland's Even in the End

Nicholas Gottlund was kind enough to mail over a few of the awesome zines he's put out through his press, Gottlund Verlag.
The first one I'm going to post is Peter Sutherland's Even in the End. It's beautifully hand printed and sewn together.

If you don't know about Gottlund Verlag's yet, you should look into it. Nicholas Gottlund has got himself nestled into a beautiful barn studio in the woods of Kutztown P.A. and continues to put out stunning hand made editions.

Even in the End is a 24 page black and white letterpress printed zine, edition of 500. Peter Sutherland's photos are stark and powerful. Some of my pictures make them look a little muddy, but this zine honestly sets a standard for craftsmanship and is more than worth the $35 they're asking.

"The rugged nature of the book matches the wild and epic scale of the images. We have allowed in the printing and binding for any inconsistencies to present themselves as evidence of the process."

Do yourself a favor and go take a look at Peter Sutherland's website too if you haven't already. It's cool.

The World is Saved

Blogger is cutting our service off as of May 1 so keep your eyes open for a couple things before then. I've got a few Gottlund Verlag reviews coming up, but first -

Jeff Luker has sent over a copy of his book The World is Saved. I like it a lot and it's now sold out so I thought I would share a few pictures.

The World is Saved is a full colour 52 page catalog of Jeff's work. It was a hand signed edition of 100.

It's printed magazine sized at 8.25” x 10.75” and that's really nice. The tone and colour in Luker's photos are really great so it's nice to see them printed at a decent size.

Remember that one from the cover of Romka #1?

I really like this portrait.

Anyways, I feel like that's barely a preview, there are so many great pictures in this one. If you missed out, you really missed out.
You can see more of Jeff's work on Jeffluker.com or get his new book, You Are Nowhere, which is out through Kaugummi.

Thanks Jeff!
