A couple words with Gabe Holcombe

Who: Gabe Holcombe. I'm Twenty-five and currently living in Chicago, IL.

What: I have a horrible memory. When I read a book, I can't remember anything from the previous page. I can't mentally focus enough to remember specific events or people, so I like to take pictures instead. When I was in high school, living in a small town, I would 'bench' freight trains--literally sit in the bushes for hours and take photographs of graffiti on the passing trains. Taking pictures of non-graffiti or train-related events was just a spinoff that I eventually began to prefer as I grew older. I still appreciate the aesthetic, though.

When: Nighttime is preferred. Floorboard squeaks and out come the freaks. I'm also very anxiety prone, so if it's someplace extra scary, I like the daytime instead. I like going to cutty, sad, desolate places during the day.

Where: Always underdog-type locales. I've always lived 'in the middle of nowhere' or 'upstate' from where the action was, so that's most comfortable.

Why: Taking photographs is a good way make friends and influence people. It's a creative output with which I feel most happy spending my time.

How: Point and shoots, throw away cameras and film. I am as amateur as it gets. Anything at a second hand store or thrift store is nice. If it's worth more than a few bucks, I'll flip in on eBay and use what I already have.

I really like Gabe's style, check out more on his flickr. He also runs a sweet DIY cassette tape label called Lillerne. Good stuff all around!
