blood of the blog sunday

We've been slacking pretty hard on blood of the blog sundays lately. Sorry about that! This week I think you should check out Martha Cooper's blog on 12oz. If you don't know who Martha is, you've got some research to do.
Check it out HERE.

a couple words with Mark Peckmezian

Mark Peckmezian is cool.

Who: My name is Mark Peckmezian. I'm going into my fourth year at
Ryerson for photography. I'm 23. Don't know what else to mention.

What: I guess I'd divide my stuff up into two categories: the more
serious, planned-out stuff, and the more incidental, snapshot-y stuff

When: No time in particular.

Where: Toronto

Why: Social deficit resulting in Napoleon complex. Also it's sort of just too late to back out now.

How: Everything is analog, for some ideological but mostly practical reasons. For the more serious stuff I'll use whatever --
Graflex 4x5, Hasselblad, Rolleiflex, Nikon F5. The snapshot stuff is
almost all done with a Contax T2, but sometimes my Rolleiflex.
I have a darkroom and print everything myself. Especially for the snapshot stuff, the printing is like 50% of the process; it's at least as important as the image itself.

deep inside with jonathan leblanc

what are some of your influences? the italian murderers that live next door, dollar stores, the world wide web, synth farts, arguments, dreams, WWE superstars (AUSTIN 3:16), deformities, ET porn, the Bible, Mormons, the Tony's and Randy's of the world, candies, the Rapture, failures, successes, childhood Disney censorship, water, you, space operas, exorcisms, broken bones, fat kids, skinny kids, skim milk, insomnia, and some other things

age / where you live / what you do there?
Twenty, Toronto, Hang out and about, keep myself distracted.

okay, so you take photos. are you methodical or do you shoot what you see 'point and shoot' kid?

methodical photos sometimes seem to be more enjoyable setting up than actually photographing, BUT i do it anyway cuz it's the shit. Usually i try and take candid shots or put myself in situations where photographic opportunities will present themselves to meeeeeee i.e. music shows, angry times, oopsidaisies, and crump battles

format query! what do you prefer, 35mm or 120 or digital? whyyy?

I enjoy using all cameras, to the point that it's nerdy and addictive. I have way more cammies than i need.

okay, yr going to ocad for photo next year; what are you hoping to take from that?

i just got accepted, so that's pretty neat. i guess im looking forward to seeing all the cool styles of pants that my classmates will be wearing. AND ALSO using all the expensive equipment they have that i'd never use otherwise. OHHH AND their darkroom has a spinning room entrance thing.

what constitutes a good photo for you?

JiiiM!! uhh, there are images from total opposite ends of the spectrum that im into. from shitty jpeg toy digi demon shots to hasselblad diamond coated nipple twinkles. if it's good it's good, but i usually can't say why

okay, outside of being an amazing photographer, you're also my #1 favorite illustrator ever ever. why don't you post any drawings anymore?!

i don't why i keep my drawings to myself, but thanks for the kind words bud! maybe, i'll put some up soon.

last words?

Shoot for the moon! If you miss, you'll kill innocent people, and go to JAIL FOREVER!

thank you jonathan!!! you are my best friend.

you are a fool if you don't hire him to do some work for you. he is contemporary photography, and you know this as well as i do.

A couple words with Gabe Holcombe

Who: Gabe Holcombe. I'm Twenty-five and currently living in Chicago, IL.

What: I have a horrible memory. When I read a book, I can't remember anything from the previous page. I can't mentally focus enough to remember specific events or people, so I like to take pictures instead. When I was in high school, living in a small town, I would 'bench' freight trains--literally sit in the bushes for hours and take photographs of graffiti on the passing trains. Taking pictures of non-graffiti or train-related events was just a spinoff that I eventually began to prefer as I grew older. I still appreciate the aesthetic, though.

When: Nighttime is preferred. Floorboard squeaks and out come the freaks. I'm also very anxiety prone, so if it's someplace extra scary, I like the daytime instead. I like going to cutty, sad, desolate places during the day.

Where: Always underdog-type locales. I've always lived 'in the middle of nowhere' or 'upstate' from where the action was, so that's most comfortable.

Why: Taking photographs is a good way make friends and influence people. It's a creative output with which I feel most happy spending my time.

How: Point and shoots, throw away cameras and film. I am as amateur as it gets. Anything at a second hand store or thrift store is nice. If it's worth more than a few bucks, I'll flip in on eBay and use what I already have.

I really like Gabe's style, check out more on his flickr. He also runs a sweet DIY cassette tape label called Lillerne. Good stuff all around!
